Military Road Alliance Delegates to hear Lake Pontchartrain Basin Discussion
Slidell – JoAnn Burke, Education Coordinator of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation (LPBF), will present a program entitled “Pontchartrain Basin: Our Land, a Natural Resource” to the Military Road Alliance (M.R.A.) delegates at their monthly meeting. Open to the public, this meeting will be held Wednesday, August 18. Scheduled to begin promptly at 7:30 p.m., the Lake Pontchartrain Basin presentation will be held in the dining room of Live Oak Assisted Living Center, just off East Gause Blvd.
According to J. Ernest “Sunny” Breeding Jr, current president of the M.R.A, “It is very important that we all do what we can to protect our natural resources, which include Lake Pontchartrain, the wetlands, our coast and the offshore islands. The recent oil spill clearly emphasizes how vigilant we must be, because a disaster can strike at any time.”
Breeding encourages area residents to make time to attend this meeting, to better understand the local environment, and to find out what they can do to help protect the area involved with these natural resources.
Burke, who has been affiliated with the “Save Our Lake – Save Our Coast” effort since 2001, has a B.S. in Biology Education and a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of New Orleans. Prior to her work with the LPBF, Burke taught science in the classroom for ten years. Burke and her husband reside in New Orleans.
The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation is a non-profit organization, which was established in 1989 for the preservation and restoration of the entire Lake Pontchartrain Basin ecosystem. The LPBF focus is on environmental issues concerning water quality, habitat and the coast in the Pontchartrain Basin watershed. The LPBF hosts “Save our Lake” and “Save our Coast” campaigns.
