Military Road Alliance Votes to Oppose
Request to Elevate Landfill to 125-ft.
Slidell, LA -- The Military Road Alliance (M.R.A.) recently passed a resolution opposing the vertical expansion of a local landfill to a height of 125 feet, proposed by Slidell Landfill L.L.C. The site of the landfill is on the east side of Interstate 10 near LA Highway 433. The M.R.A. recommends that if the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) grants the extension at all, that the vertical height be limited to 40 feet.
The full text of the motion was as follows: “The M.R.A. is opposed to a 125 ft. landfill height; however, we recognize the important need to properly dispose of Hurricane Katrina debris. Therefore, if the vertical expansion permit is to be granted by DEQ, then the landfill height must be limited to 40 ft., and alternative solid waste reduction and debris disposal methods must be studied by DEQ.”
Robert Golding, current M.R.A. president, researched the proposal at the St. Tammany Parish Library prior to the meeting and was able to discuss the application in detail. Further, several delegates, who had studied the issue, said they feel the requested expansion would affect all of Slidell, not just the residents and businesses adjacent to it. After a lengthy discussion, the M.R.A. delegates passed the resolution with a motion made by J. Ernest “Sunny” Breeding, Jr., of Doubloon Bayou Estates, and with a second by Robert Broome, of French Branch Estates. The M.R.A. delegates represent several thousand residents in the greater Military Road area east of Slidell .
Currently the member subdivisions of the Military Road Alliance include: Breckenridge, Cross Gates, Doubloon Bayou Estates, French Branch, Frenchmen's Estates, Lake Village, The Old River Road Association (several subdivisions in the Quail Ridge area), The Park Condo Association, Stonebridge, and Willow Wood.
The M.R.A. does not support individual political candidates; however, its by-laws do allow for taking positions on issues affecting the community.
More information on the M.R.A. and its activities is accessible on the association's website: www.militaryroadalliance.org.
