Military Road Alliance SupportsParish Sales Tax Renewal
Slidell, LA - The Military Road Alliance (MRA), an organization of eleven homeowners associations in the greater Military Road area east of Slidell, has announced its support for the renewal of the St. Tammany Parish two-cent sales tax. Parish President Kevin Davis answered questions on the tax proposal from homeowners and delegates at the MRA’s June15th meeting. According to MRA president Bob Golding the vote to support the tax was unanimous. Golding said, “This will be an important vote for the future of St. Tammany Parish. It is the only parish tax dedicated to maintaining our streets and highways and represents 45% of the parish’s total operating budget. It’s an important issue for our quality of life and for economic development.” The two-cent sales tax was first approved by the voters in 1986 for the purpose of paving 772 parish roads and maintaining 682 miles of existing roads. Today the parish maintains 3,000 roads. Language in the ballot provides for revenue sharing with municipalities under intergovernmental agreements to maintain roads in those jurisdictions. According to Davis the parish will use about twelve percent of the revenue as matching funds to attract state and federal dollars for improvements to state numbered roads like Hwy 11, 21, 59, 190, Airport Rd., Gause Blvd. and Fremeaux. “The voters will decide the future of road maintenance in St. Tammany Parish,” said Golding. “The parish government has been a good steward of our money under the existing tax. They have spent it exactly as they were supposed to. I urge our citizens to vote YES, on Saturday, July 16.” MRA member homeowners associations include: Breckenridge; Chanticleer; Cross Gates; Doubloon Bayou Estates; Forest Ridge; French Branch Estates; Frenchmen’s Estates; Lake Village; Park Condo Association; Stonebridge; and Willow Wood.
